WAFU B U17: Côte d’Ivoire Hands Golden Eaglets Last Four Spot

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets scraped into the semifinals of the WAFU B U17 Tournament in Togo after Côte d’Ivoire’s 3-1 victory over Ghana on Tuesday handed the Nigerians a spot in the last four.

Fatai Amoo’s side had lost 1-0 to the Little Elephants and a 1-1 draw against the Black Starlets in their second match meant they faced elimination unless the Elephants beat the Starlets by at least two clear goals in their last group game.

The Elephants duly handed the Nigerians a huge favour, beating Ghana by the required goal margin to help the Golden Eaglets advance to the last four of the regional qualifiers for the 2021 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

The Ivorians qualify as Group B winners with a maximum of six points while five-time world champions Nigeria who are level on one point with Ghana, qualify in second place because of a superior goals difference of -1 to Ghana’s -2.

The Golden Eaglets take on Burkina Faso in the last four on Friday while Ivory Coast face Niger Republic in the other semifinal, with the winners booking their spot in the final and at the African U-17 Cup of Nations to be hosted by Morocco later in the year.
