Villarreal have won the Europa League after edging Manchester United 11-10 on penalties in the final at Gdansk Stadium.

United’s David de Gea missed the decisive kick after all players from both teams had scored. Samuel Chukwueze failed to make the squad after being unable to prove his fitness following his return from injury.

It is the Spanish side’s first-ever trophy as a club and manager Unai Emery’s fourth triumph in the competition. It also means Villarreal will play in the Champions League next season after finishing seventh in La Liga.

The Spanish side went ahead in the first half through Gerard Moreno but Edison Cavani restored parity after the interval and with nothing to separate both sides at full time and after extra time, the match went on to penalties and Villarreal proved the more composed side.

The loss marks a disappointing finish to the season for Ole Gunnar Solskjær who has failed to win a trophy in three years at United with the English side enduring their longest trophy drought since 1980’s.
