Victor Osimhen Injury Places AFCON Participation In Doubt

Victor Osimhen is in danger of missing next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after his Italian club side Napoli revealed the extent of the injury that forced the 22-year-old off in the Serie A clash with Inter Milan on Sunday.

Osimhen exited the encounter at the San Siro ten minutes after the interval with a swollen eye and cheekbone following a clash of heads with Inter defender Milan Škriniar.

Napoli say tests on the striker revealed he suffered a fractured orbit and cheekbone. A statement on their website says Osimhen will undergo surgery on the injury in the next few days.

“The instrumental tests carried out on Victor Osimhen at the end of the Inter-Napoli match revealed multiple displaced fractures of the orbit and of the left cheekbone,” the statement said.

“The player will undergo surgery in the next few days and will remain under observation at the Niguarda Hospital in Milan tonight.”

The development is a severe setback for the Super Eagles with Osimhen likely to be out for up to two months placing his participation in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in jeopardy.

While Napoli has not revealed how long Osimhen will be out of action, reports suggest it can take up to nine weeks to heal from a cheekbone and orbit surgery

With the 2022 AFCON set to commence on 9 January 2022, Osimhen faces a race against time to be fit for the tournament.
