Venus Williams Withdraws From Brisbane International as “Setback” Strikes

Venus Williams will not be participating in the season-opening Brisbane International commencing on Monday, January 6 after a “setback” during practice.

The 39-year-old had been given a wild card entry for the tournament and was expected to feature alongside the likes of world number one Ashleigh Barty and Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka.

Sloane Stephens, Elina Svitolina, Samantha Stosur, Alja Tomljanovic, Karolina Plskova, Petra Kvitova and Angelique Kerber, Maria Sharapova will also feature at Queensland.

Williams revealed she will no longer take part in the competition through a written statement on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately I will not be starting my season in Brisbane due to an unexpected setback during my training,” she said.

The American Veteran said she still hoped to play at the Adelaide International later this month ahead of the Australian Open – the first Grand Slam of the year.

“I look forward to being in Australia in the New Year and will see everyone in Adelaide.”

Williams’ replacement will be announced on Thursday by the organizers.
