The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is almost set to debut at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The technology has already recorded a measure of success in major European leagues like the Italian Serie A and the German Bundesliga and FIFA President Gianni Infantino is a huge fan.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is expected to make a decision on Saturday on the likely use of the VAR technology in Russia.
Infantino has been a major advocate for its inclusion in the World Cup.
In his words via Marca, Infantino said: “I couldn’t live with myself if the World Cup is decided by a decision where everybody knows what has happened aside from the referee.”
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin is, however, not a big fan of the system.
The Slovenian while speaking on the technology said: “We aren’t even contemplating the use of VAR at this moment.”
“The next Champions League will not have VAR given the failures the current system still has.” he added.
