Danish second seed Caroline Wozniacki has qualified for the second round of the US Open following her first round win over Samantha Stosur of Australia.

The Australian Open champion Caroline defeated Stosur 6-3 6-2 in hot conditions to setup a second round meeting with Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.

Fourth seed and Wimbledon Open champion Angelique Kerber is also through to the next round after the German tennis star defeated Russian Margarita Gasparyan 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in their first round clash and will now face Johanna Larsson of Sweden for a place in the third round.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic saw off Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-1 6-4 to also book a second round spot.
