US Open: Defending Champion, Angelique Kerber Crashes Out In Round One

Defending champion, Angelique Kerber has crashed out of the US Open after losing to Japanese youngster Naomi Osaka.

Sixth seed Kerber, who was also beaten in the first round of the French Open earlier this year, lost to 19-year-old Osaka 6-3 6-1 to become the first big name casualty of this year’s US Open.

Speaking about her victory, a very delighted Osaka said: “It means a lot, especially since last time I was here.”

“This court has not given me fond memories but hopefully this overtakes that.”

“When it was 4-1 today I was thinking, ‘I really hope I don’t do what I did last year’ and that let me focus a lot.”

Kerber’s loss means she will drop out of the women’s ranking top 10 after the tournament.
