Top Seed Halep Through To Second Round In First Grand Slam Bid

World number one Simona Halep is through to the second round as she continues her bid to win a first Grand Slam title.

The Romanian tennis star recovered from losing the first set to beat American Alison Riske 2-6 6-1 6-1 against American Alison Riske.

Last year’s losing finalists would be hoping to go one better than last year’s edition which ended with a final loss to unseeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

One of her major challengers, Caroline Wozniacki, is through to the third round after she won her second round clash with Spanish opposition.

Australian Open champion and second seed Wozniacki beat Spain’s Georgina Garcia Perez 6-1 6-0 to zoom into the next round.

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina and eighth seed Petra Kvitova also through to the last 32 (third round) following victories over Viktoria Kuzmona of Slovakia and Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena respectively.

Ukraine’s Svitolina defeated Kuzmova 6-3 6-4 while Czech star Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, saw off Arruabarrena 6-0 6-4.

On her victory, Halep said: “I didn’t feel the pressure, because I know that every match is tough at this tournament, so I don’t expect anything.”

“I think the nerves are really good. It means that you care about what you are doing and your desire is really big.” she added.

The 26-year old will now face another American Taylor Townsend for a place in the last 32.
