One of football’s oldest traditions is giving teams nicknames that tell a story and clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) are not exempt.
Every Nigeria Professional Football League club has a nickname, some given by their own fans, some used originally as insults by rival supporters, and some from a state’s traditions or history.
Nigeria’s topflight football league, the NPFL has evolved over the years. This year, the league enjoys a certain distinction in that Twenty Four (24) teams are partaking in it compared to twenty (20) in recent years and they all have nicknames including Delta Force FC who recently purchased the slot of Kada City to prosecute their remaining eight (8) League matches. I bet you didn’t know.
Clubs in Europe are popularly referred by their nickname but sadly, many Nigerians do not know the nickname of their home or favourite club.
For instance, Chelsea is called the The Blues, Manchester United is referred to as The Red Devils and Manchester City is otherwise known as The Citizens. So, what’s Wikki Tourist known as? Gotcha!
