Team Nigeria Await Favorable Draws at African Senior Wrestling Championship

Team Nigeria will today know their opponents at the 2019 African Senior Wrestling Championship holding in Hammamet, Tunisia.

The first batch of the contingent consisting of the female team, Coach Purity Akuh and Daniel Ighali, President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation arrived Tunis yesterday.

The draws which will decide Nigeria’s opponent is scheduled for 3 pm, as Nigeria’s female wrestlers prepare to do battle in their first fight on Saturday. The men will fight a day after and are expected to hit Tunisia today.

As the defending champions, Nigeria will be presenting a 10-man female team competing in all weight categories while five will compete in the freestyle event and one wrestler slugs it out in the Greco Roman event.

Already, Nigeria has missed out of the junior and cadet events which were brought to an end yesterday, Thursday.

The continental championship is criteria for wrestlers who hope to participate in the World Wrestling Championship in Bulgaria later this year.

The tournament equally affords wrestlers the opportunity to garner the needed points that will give them automatic qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan as only the top six wrestlers in each weight category get automatic qualification for the Olympic Games

On March 31, the curtains will be raised on the competition which commenced on the 26th of March.
