Spanish La Liga Watch: Barcelona Drop Points Again As Rivals Madrid Fail To Capitalise

League leaders Barcelona dropped more points again after they could only play a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo at the Nou Camp in their week 14 clash in Saturday’s early kickoff.

Having played an entertaining 1-1 draw with nearest challengers Valencia in their last league game, Barcelona were expected to return to winning ways against Celta Vigo but their opponents were doggedly impressive and were good value for the point they earned.

Spanish international forward Iago Aspas shocked the Nou Camp faithfuls with the opening goal on 20 minutes but Lionel Messi was on hand some two minutes later to pull Barcelona level.

Barcelona star Luis Suarez gave his side the lead for the first time in the game on 62 minutes but Celta hit back eight minutes later through Maxi Gomez and that goal ensured they shared the spoils with their more fancied opponents.

Arch rivals Real Madrid travelled to the San Mames to face their hosts Athletic Bilbao but the game ended in a disappointing goalless draw for the Los Merengues who missed a very good opportunity to move within 6 points of Barcelona.

Their city rivals Atletico Madrid didn’t have such problems though they had to overturn Willian Jose’s first half penalty with second half goals from Luis Felipe and Antoine Griezmann.

The win was enough to move Diego Simeone’s side to within 6 points of Barcelona while they maintain the two-point cushion they have over Sevilla in 5th place.

Sevilla defeated Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 through second half goals from Wissem Ben Yedder and Michael Krohn-Delhi to stay in the hunt for UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification.

They are now level on points with Real Madrid but they have an inferior goal difference to the capital club.
