Spanish La Liga Review: Atletico, Valencia Fail To Close Gap On Leaders Barcelona

Atletico Madrid and Valencia have failed to significantly close the gap on league leaders Barcelona after respective setbacks against Girona and Las Palmas on Saturday in a week 20 clash.

Cristian Portu cancelled out Antoine Griezmann’s first half strike for second placed team Atletico in the second half to earn lowly Girona a credible 1-1 away draw at the new Wanda Metropolitano.

Valencia, in third place, lost 2-1 at relegation threatened Las Palmas to further lose grounds in the title race.

Marcelino’s men finished the game with 9 men after Gabriel Paulista and Ruben Vezo were sent off with two yellow cards in the second half as goals from Jonathan Vieira and Jonathan Calleri (penalty) overturned Santa Mina’s early strike for Valencia.

Villareal have leapfrogged champions Real Madrid into the top four after a 2-1 win over Levante at home in their week 20 clash.
