South Africa have unveiled a 127-man squad for the 2018 CAA African Championships slated for Asaba from August 1-5.
The just-concluded Commonwealth Games proved to be a successful one for South Africa and the aim for Asaba 2018 will be to target more honours in the world of Athletics.
The 127-man include several athletes that won medals at the aforementioned Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
Sprinters Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies, Long Jump stars Luvo Manyonga and Ruswahl Samaai join middle-distance star Caster Semenya, hurdler Wenda Nel and Javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen as part of the squad.
South Africa will be hoping to defend its continental crown won in 2016 in Durban with a total of 33 medals ahead of Kenya’s 24 medals and Nigeria’s 16 medals.
The Asaba event is expected to serve as a form of discovering athletes ahead of next year’s IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
“This is the squad that is meant to be finalised in due course to produce a best and formidable team that will defend the titles won in Morocco in 2014 and Durban in 2016.” An official of the Athletics Federation in South Africa stated.
Apart from South Africa, other countries like Nigeria, Kenya etc. also have a big squad.
