South Africa Goalkeeper Sets AFCON Record In Penalty Shootout Win Vs Cape Verde

South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero for his side as they beat Cape Verde on penalties to reach the AFCON semi-finals on Saturday.

After a hard-fought 0-0 draw in regulation time, the game had to be decided on penalties which South Africa won 2-1.

But the standout performer in the shootout was Williams who made four saves.

Following his heroics, CAF confirmed that Williams has become the first goalkeeper to ever save four penalties in a single AFCON shootout.

South Africa will now feature in their first AFCON semi-final since the 2000 edition co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria.

The 1996 AFCON champions will take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Wednesday in Bouake.

Williams currently plies his trade for South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Mamelodi Sundowns.
