Semi Ajayi Joins West Brom After Missing Out of Super Eagles AFCON 2019 Squad

English Championship side West Bromwich Albion have completed the signing of Nigeria international Semi Ajayi from Rotherham United.

Ajayi becomes The Baggies’ third summer signing by new coach Slaven Bilic who is in a rebuilding process.

The 25-year-old, who can play as a defender and in midfield, joined the West Midlands side for an undisclosed fee which some have reported to be around £1.5million.

The deal, which is a step up the ladder for the former Miller, will keep him at the Hawthorns for a four-year period.

Speaking to West Brom media, Ajayi said: “It’s a great opportunity for me. I want to play at the highest level and I have joined a club with the ambition to get there.

“I want to play my part in helping the team get promoted because that is definitely the target.”

The Super Eagles player moved to Rotherham from Cardiff in 2017 on a free transfer and appeared 160 times for the relegated Millers, scoring 17 goals and contributing 5 assists.

“I know I’m not the finished article and I feel I can improve. I am playing alongside some top defenders and I think I can learn a great deal from them,” Ajayi continued.

“For me, it doesn’t matter where you are in the league – top or bottom. I want to win every game and I prepare like that.

“But I want to play at the highest level and it’s exciting to be joining a club that wants to get back there.”

Ajayi missed out of Nigeria’s squad who finished third place in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations when he was dropped from Gernot Rohr’s 23-man list. He will be looking to appear in his first major tournament for the Super Eagles if the Super Eagles qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
