Schalke 04 Seal Mendyl Transfer From Lille

German Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 have signed young Moroccan defender Hamza Mendyl from Lille.

The 20-year-old left-back joins Schalke 04 from French Ligue 1 side Lille Metropole after putting pen to paper on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

He featured in 13 league games for Lille after making his debut in a 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Caen in February 2017.

On the new acquisition, Schalke 04 manager Domenico Tedesco told the club’s website that: “We [Schalke 04 and Lille] have spent a long and detailed time with Hamza [Mendyl] and are happy that we were able to sign him.”

“He brings a lot with what we want for this position: athletics, dynamics, robustness and courage in the offensive. We are eager to take the next steps in our development with this talent.” He stated further.

Mendyl added: “I am very happy to have signed a contract with such a big club.”

“With Tedesco, I encounter a coach known for improving players. He proved that impressively last year. I too would like to develop further under him and help Schalke 04 play a good role in all three competitions [Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League].” He concluded.

Hamza Mendyl is in line to make his debut when Schalke 04 take on VFL Wolfsburg in their league opener on August 25.
