Russia 2018 Group A Review: Uruguay Leapfrog Hosts Russia Into Top Spot With Win As Egypt Bow Out Without A Point

Uruguay have won Group A at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia after they leapfrogged the tournament hosts with a 3-0 victory over the Europeans.

The two-time champions raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half through goals from Luis Suarez and Denis Cheryshev (own goal) before Russian right-back Igor Smolnikov received his marching orders on 36 minutes for two yellow cards.

Paris Saint Germain (PSG) striker Edinson Cavani wrapped up the victory in the dying moments of the game with his first goal of the tournament.

With the win, Uruguay become the first team to win all three World Cup games without conceding a goal since Argentina achieved the feat at the 1998 edition.

In the other group game, Saudi Arabia came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 to finish third ahead of the North Africans.

Salman Al-Faraj and Muhamed Al-Dawsari scored either side of the interval to overturn Mohamed Salah’s opener for Egypt.

The Saudi Arabia goals came after Fahad Al-Muwallad had missed a 41st penalty.

Uruguay will now face the second-placed team Group B in the round of 16, while hosts Russia battle Group B winners.
