RUGBY: Nigeria Wins Bid to Host Africa Silver Cup

Nigeria’s bid to host the Rugby Africa Silver Cup Pool A tournament in June has been approved by continental body Rugby Africa with the tournament set to be staged in June at the Lagos Polo Club.

The Silver Cup is Rugby Africa’s second tier tournament behind the Gold Cup and is usually contested by six teams divided into two groups of three with the winner gaining promotion to the Rugby Africa Gold Cup. The 2019 edition, however, appears likely to have eight teams in contention with Pool A consisting of Botswana, Ghana, Madagascar, and Nigeria.

Reacting to Nigeria’s successful bid, Technical Director of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) Ntiese Williams said hosting the Rugby Africa Silver Cup tournament “is a huge opportunity to put rugby on the Nigeria map as never before”.

The 2018 edition was contested by Botswana, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Algeria, Senegal, and Zambia.
