Rohr Dampens Title Expectations At 2019 AFCON

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has underplayed talks of his team winning the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cameroon.

The Franco-German tactician also stated that he’s taking things step by step starting with the qualifiers for the tournament.

He spoke about AFCON during a press conference held in Lagos on Friday to unveil the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming qualifier against Seychelles on Saturday, September 8.

In his words, he said: “The last time Nigeria won the African Cup Nations in 2013, I was the coach of Niger Republic.”

“The team hasn’t qualified for two successive Nations Cups.

“We want to ensure that this team qualify for Cameroon 2019. If that happens we will try to qualify from our group at the competition proper and try to take it step by step to the final.

“Five teams represented Africa at the World Cup. Normally those teams will want to play well at the AFCON.” He concluded.

Gernot Rohr and his players know there’s no room for complacency when they face Seychelles on Matchday 2 largely due to the opening matchday defeat to South Africa (2-0 loss).
