World number one Rafael Nadal is through to the quarterfinals at the ongoing Rogers Cup in Toronto after beating Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets in a last 16 clash.
Nadal, 32, defeated the Wawrinka 7-5 7-6 (7-4) to take his impressive record against the Swiss player to 17 wins from 20 meetings.
Speaking after his victory over the world number 195, Nadal said: “To have success on these kind of surfaces, I need to play first thing well and then aggressive,”
“It’s true that if you don’t play well, it’s hard to be aggressive. Every match has been so difficult and a great test for me.”
The 17-time Grand Slam champion also praised Wawrinka as he continues to work his way back to the top after a long injury layoff.
The Spaniard said: “I’m very happy to see Stan playing so well again. I know how tough it is from my personal experience [to come back].”
“If he is healthy, I have no doubt he will be back in the right position and fighting for the biggest events.” He concluded.
