Rivers United Complete Blockbuster Signing Of Enyimba Duo Afelokhai And Anaemena

Rivers United have completed the audacious signing of Enyimba duo Theophilus Afelokhai and Ifeanyi Anaemena on a free transfer.

Both players passed a medical at the club on Tuesday and an official statement confirming their signing is expected soon.

Goalkeeper Afelokhai, 32, and centre back Anaemena, 28, will reportedly earn in the region of one million naira each for the duration of their contracts, the lengths of which remains undisclosed.

The statement move from Rivers United bears a hint of revenge after the Nigeria Football Federation affirmed the league standings for the curtailed 2019-20 Nigeria Professional Football League season, confirming Enyimba in second place over Rivers United.

Rivers United which finished third in the concluded season had opposed the use of Points Per Game and head-to-head tie breaker in determining the final standings, but their petition to be recognised as the second placed team was dismissed by the NFF on Wednesday.

Afelokhai and Anaemena had come to the end of their contracts and demanded improved terms to sign an extension which Enyimba declined to meet.

Rivers United then swooped in to meet the players’ demand and will feel they have pulled off a coup in snapping up the highly rated duo.

With the team set to play in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, the continental know-how of the hugely experienced duo could prove to be an asset for Stanley Eguma’s side.

Anaemena ends a six-year association with Enyimba having joined the Aba Elephants from Giwa FC in 2014, with Afelokhai joining a year later from Kano Pillars.

Anaemena won two league titles with the Aba Elephants in 2015 and 2019 with Afelokhai a part of the squad for the latter title triumph.

Both players earned call ups to the Super Eagles in their time in Aba.
