Real Madrid Sacks Embattled Julen Lopetegui

Reigning UEFA Champions League winners have sacked Julen Lopetegui as their head coach after a 5-1 defeat at Barcelona on Sunday. The loss was Los Blanco’s fourth defeat in 10 La Liga games under the manager, after only four months.

Real Madrid legend, Santiago Solari, has been named the team’s manager on a temporary basis. It had been earlier speculated that former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte would take over after Lopetegui’s sack, but due to legal issues the Italian has with his former club, his chances of taking over have grown slim.

Lopetegui endured a difficult four months while in charge at Madrid. In a controversial sacking from his former position as Spain’s coach just on the eve of the World Cup after he was named as Madrid’s manager it looked like his unfortunate departure had an effect on his time at the Bernabéu. While at the Spanish capital, he lost “crucial” matches to Levante, Alavés and, CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.
