Rashidi Yekini: Legendary Striker To Be Immortalised By Kwara State Government

Super Eagles goals king Rashidi Yekini is set to be immortalised by the Kwara State government which revealed on Thursday that the Kwara State Sports Complex Stadium in Ilorin will be named after late player.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq revealed this when he visited the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare in Abuja.

Governor AbdulRazaq said, “We will send a bill to the State House of Assembly to immortalize Rashidi Yekini with the name of the stadium changing after the approval.”

Mr. Sunday Dare had reminded the Governor during the meeting about the series of letter that the Ministry wrote to the Kwara State Government for the immortalization of the late football legend.

Mr. Dare urged the Governor to sustain his support for sports development which he noted held the potential to reducing social vices.

“I want to thank his excellency for hosting our biggest youth game in Ilorin, your excellency we are coming to Ilorin again because of the facilities in University of Ilorin soonest for the youth game.

“I love the fact His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq loves sport I want to encourage your excellency to invest more on sports,” he stated.

Legendary striker Yekini who passed away in 2012 holds the record for the most goals scored for the Super Eagles, netting 37 times in 58 appearances.

He was named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993 and represented Nigeria in five major tournaments, including the 1994 AFCON which the Eagles won and two World Cups where he scored the country’s first-ever goal in the competition in a 3-0 win over Bulgaria during the 1994 edition in the United States of America.
