Argentina’s 1986 World Cup winner Ricardo Giusti has revealed that the players will decide the team ahead of their crucial clash with Nigeria at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in St. Petersburg on Tuesday night.

Two-time world champions Argentina have been under the microscope after a disastrous start to their World Cup campaign in Russia.

Argentina have a solitary point from two games and presently occupy bottom spot in Group D.

The team’s performances in Russia has heaped pressure on head coach Jorge Sampaoli, who reportedly met with Argentina Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia on Saturday night before the decision not to sack him was reached.

However, Giusti says the players would be consulted ahead of the crucial Nigeria game and that he was informed by the team’s general manager Jorge Burruchaga.

Giusti and Burruchaga were part of the 1986 World Cup winning squad alongside country legend Diego Armando Maradona.

In his words via dailymail.co.uk, Giusti said: “The players will decide the team, that’s a fact. If Sampaoli wants to sit in the bench, he can do it. If not, no problem.”

Argentina have to beat Nigeria in their final group game and hope leaders Croatia avoid defeat against Iceland to qualify for the knockout stage.

The former world champions could still secure a last 16 place with an Iceland win via a better goal difference than the first timers.
