Peru Pay The Penalty In Denmark Loss On Return To World Cup Stage

Peru’s return to the World Cup stage didn’t go as planned after the South American nation paid the penalty in their 1-0 loss to Denmark in their opening game in Group C at the ongoing tournament in Russia.

Sao Paolo forward Christian Cuevas missed out on a glorious chance to write his name in lights by missing from the penalty spot just before halftime only for him to be punished by Youssuf Poulsen off an assist from Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen just before the hour mark.

Poulsen redeemed himself after he tripped Cuevas for the aforementioned penalty which Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama awarded with the help of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

The Europeans thereafter held on with the help of a rearguard action inspired by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as the Peruvians their first appearance for 36 years (since 1982) with defeat.

Peru finish the day as the bottom placed team in Group C as a result of the defeat while their conquerors Denmark go second and level on points with leaders France.
