Osimhen Strike Boosts Lille Champions League Hopes

Victor Osimhen was on target for Lille as the Great Danes boosted their Champions League qualification hopes with a 2-0 win against Angers at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Friday.

Osimhen’s 14th-minute strike put Christophe Galtier’s men on their way before Renato Sanches made sure of the result with the second in the 75th-minute.

The win lifts Lille level on points with 3rd-placed Rennes who occupy the last Champions League qualifying spot albeit Rennes have a superior goals difference and host 14th-placed Brest on Saturday.

Lille have now won three straight games in Ligue 1 following the 2-0 home loss to leaders PSG on 26 January.

Osimhen has now scored 12 times in Ligue 1 and is just four goals from equalling 1997 African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba’s record of 16 goals for a Nigerian in a single season which he set in the 1997/1998 season.

With 14 games left of the season, it appears a fair bet that the former Wolfsburg striker would eclipse that mark.

The 20-year-old Super Eagles striker is enjoying an explosive debut season with Lille and has scored 16 times in 33 appearances in all competitions.

His performances have seen him linked with a summer move to European heavyweights Liverpool and Barcelona in recent weeks.
