Odion Ighalo Shuns Europe For Extended Stay in China

Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Odion Ighalo, has joined another Chinese Super League side, Shanghai Shenhua after his former club, Changchun Yatai were relegated from the Chinese Super League (CSL).

Ighalo joined Changchun Yatai in a big money transfer from Premier League side Watford and went on to become a valuable player to the club and the league, scoring 21 goals despite his club’s drop to the lower tier.

Since Yatai got relegated and Ighalo opposed to a future in Chinese lower tier football, there were speculations of him returning to Europe with rumours that Tottenham Hotspur were going to tender a bid.

However, the closure of the January transfer window in Europe winter transfer confirmed that the Nigerian international will stay put in China.

The employers of former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins, Shanghai Shenhua announced the signing on their social media outlets.

Ighalo reunites with his former boss from his Watford days, Quique Sánchez Flores and could make his debut in the derby against Shanghai SIPG, on the opening day of the CSL 2019 Season on March 1.

After his presentation to the media and fans of the club, Ighalo resumed training with his new teammates in preparation for the new season.
