NWPL Super 4: Bayelsa, Sunshine Battle for Final Spot

Spectators and fans are expected to be thrilled with good football artistry later tomorrow at the Agege Township Stadium when Bayelsa Queens host Sunshine Queens FC in the opening match of this year’s super 4 playoffs.

Group A top team, Bayelsa Queens have a difficult task against Group B second placed team, Sunshine Queens FC considering the level of determination of the Ondo State sponsored side having failed to lift the league trophy since its establishment in 2005.

Today’s match might also be an opportunity for the Yenegoa based side to avenge the 2015 FA cup final defeat suffered in the hands of ‘The Owena Mermaids’.

Both sides have met 21 times since the creation of both teams but Bayelsa Queens boast of a superior record in the elite league having won it three times, 2004, 2006, 2007.

Both teams have also done business in the transfer window, leading to the movement of 7 players either leaving Bayelsa for Sunshine or Sunshine for Bayelsa.

Notable among the players, Jonathan Alaba, Rabi Ihiabe, Charity Ifenkor among others.

The last time both sides met was at the group stage of the 2018 Aiteo Cup, at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode, which result stood at 1-1.

Sunshine Queens are expected to put up a good fight as they seek to break the jinx of ending a season without a league shield while Bayelsa queen’s target is to end the team’s trophy drought.

A win for either side gives a final clash with the winner between Amazons of Lafia who are defending champions and Aiteo Cup winners Rivers Angels.

The two Queens will face off for a spot in the final at the Soccer Temple by 2 pm local time.
