NPFL Super Six: Danger Looms Ahead of Final Matchday Fixtures

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super Six Playoffs is on the verge of suffering match fixing allegations with final fixtures of the tourney hours away.

Enyimba of Aba are in pole position to lift the League Trophy for the eight time but will have to contend against 2017 Aiteo Cup Champions who are yet to win the NPFL title ever since their inception.

Three teams after the final matches will represent Nigeria in Africa; the top two teams in the CAF Champions League and the third in the CAF Confederations Cup.

With the title race and battle for continental slots going to the last day, the serial nature of games gives wide room for match fixing.

Apart from Enyimba who are certain of a continental ticket, Kano Pillars, Akwa United, Enugu Rangers and Lobi Stars still have a chance to represent Nigeria, howbeit, Enugu Rangers and Lobi Stars are mathematically out of the title race having gathered only five and four points respectively in their last four games.

Meanwhile, FC Ifeanyi Ubah have lost all their games and will only hope to redeem their reputation in an Eastern derby away from the East against Enugu Rangers today. Sadly, they’ve been the “whipping boys” of the tourney since day one.

The serial nature of fixtures has the potential to accommodate irregularities as all matches should have been hosted at the same time at different stadiums owing to the slim point margins between all five teams still in the race for continental slots of which three battles for the title.
