NPFL: Sunday Adetunji Joins Plateau United

Sunday Adetunji has joined Plateau United ahead of the 2020-21 Nigeria Professional Football League season.

The lanky 22-year-old striker confirmed his move to the Jos side on Wednesday, uploading a picture of him signing a contract in the club’s jersey on Twitter.

The length of the deal is not clear but the confirmation puts an end to feverish speculation over the future of the much-sought striker following his return to Nigeria after a short-lived spell at Czech Republic side FK Pribram B.

Media reports had suggested the striker had joined second-tier side Shooting Stars and former team Abia Warriors but those reports turned out to be untrue.

Instead he will turn out for Abdu Maikaba’s side who will play in the CAF Champions League next season after their finished top in the truncated 2019-20 season.

“A new beginning and challenge for me, I want to appreciate Plateau United management and coaching staff for this amazing opportunity to be part of this great family,” Adetunji wrote on Twitter.

“It was fun at FK Pribram B while it lasted, the experience will definitely shape my future.”

Though still young, Adetunji brings a wealth of experience to Plateau United having terrorised NPFL defences in his time at El Kanemi Warriors, Shooting Stars and Abia Warriors.

He also boasts considerable continental experience having played in the Champions League with Lobi Stars in 2019 and the CAF Confederation Cup with Enyimba a year earlier.

He has represented Nigeria at U23 level and while he’s yet to play for the senior side, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that played Liberia in Monrovia in 2018 in an unofficial friendly organised in honour of Liberian president and former World Player of the Year George Weah.
