NPFL: Israel Abia Confident of Breaking Mfon Udoh’s Goals Record (AUDIO)

Israel Abia in action for Rangers

Rangers International striker Israel Abia has said he is ‘sure’ of breaking Mfon Udoh’s record of 23 goals in a single NPFL season this term.

A brace on Wednesday against Dakkada FC in Uyo in a Match Day 25 fixture took his tally to 12, one goal ahead of Ndifreke Effiong (Akwa United), Ibrahim Mustapha (Plateau United) and Auwalu Ali (Kano Pillars) in the now suspended campaign.

With 13 more round of fixtures till the end of the current season, Abia will need to score, at least, another 12 goals to erase the record set by the former Enyimba captain Udoh in 2014.

Asked if he can set a new goal-record in the NPFL this season, the former Sunshine Stars goal poacher said: “Sure. Maybe, with the hardwork of the team and with the cooperation from the coaches as well, I can do that because there is a lot of encouragement towards me and towards the team in general.”

The former FC Inter of Enugu player joined Rangers from Sunshine Stars in January after scoring 7 league goals for the Akure-based outfit. He has now netted 5 league goals for the Flying Antelopes.

Abia added that his transfer to Rangers is a dream come true, even as he aspires for greater moves ahead.

“Rangers has been my dream team from childhood, and I thank God that I achieved my aim, although it is not my last (club), I am still going up,” he said.
