NPFL: Ikechukwu Ezenwa Allays Fears After Health Scare (AUDIO)

Heartland goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa says he’s “better now” after suffering a health scare in the matchday 28 encounter against FC Ifeanyiubah in Nnewi on Sunday.

Ezenwa was replaced in the 34th minute by Chijioke Ejiogu after appearing to be afflicted by an unexplained health condition.

The Naze Millionaires went on to lose the match with Lukman Aliu and Nonso Nzediegwu scoring second-half goals for the hosts and Kingsley Maduforo grabbing a late consolatory effort for the visitors.

Despite their loss, Heartland were understandably more concerned with the wellbeing of the Super Eagles goalkeeper with worries heightened by the recent experience of Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen who suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during his country’s Euro 2020 match against Finland last week.

But Ezenwa who admitted to being in ‘shock’ by the experience on Sunday has allayed any fears he might have suffered an adverse health effect due to the incident in Nnewi.

The former Katsina United goalkeeper who has been named in the Super Eagles squad to play Mexico next month assured he is fit to continue playing and praised the Heartland medical team for their prompt and effective response to his incident.

“I’m better now,” Ezenwa told Heartland’s media team on Sunday. “I thank God Almighty because it was a shock I never expected but this is the life footballers normally face.”

“But the most important thing after the game [is that] the medical staff took good care of me. As I’m speaking now, Ezenwa is fine and ready for the task ahead.

“Thanks to the medical staff of heartland football club of Owerri, Ezenwa is ready for the task ahead.”
