NPFL: Eunisell Changes Format of Highest Goalscorer Award Following 2018/19 Season Tie

Sponsors and organizers of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) highest goalscorer award have upturned their previous decision on giving the prestigious award of the 2018/2019 season’s highest goalscorer to only Ibrahim Sunusi of Nassarawa United.

Akwa United’s Mfon Udoh finished with 10 goals apiece alongside Ibrahim Sunusi but the League Management Company (LMC) officially announced Ibrahim Sunusi as the 2018/2019 NPFL highest goal scorer on disciplinary grounds.

In a turn of event, Eunisell have decided both players will take home the decorated golden boots honour to mark their immense performance in the 2018/2019 NPFL season.

The prize amounting to 2m naira is grounded on the fact that each goal scored is 200,000 naira worth.

Speaking concerning the awards, the managing director of Eunisell group of companies Chika Ikenga said,

“Our logic is simple; both players deserve to be rewarded for their performances. The eligibility to be awarded the Eunisell Boot, is based on the most goals scored. This past season saw Ibrahim and Udoh each scoring 10 goals.

“We look no further than that; there are no technical considerations that we factor in. We are delighted for these two players at the top of their game.”

Ikenga continued; “The rationale behind Eunisell introducing the award in 2018 was three-fold: First, we set out to help increase the standard of professional football in Nigeria through incentive and awareness.

“Second, demonstrate to the youth that playing football in the professional league in Nigeria, is a viable career and third, increase spectator interest and support for local teams and players.”

The inaugural Eunisell Boot winner was Kano Pillars striker, Junior Lokosa, who now plays for Tunisian and African champions, Esperance Sportif de Tunis.
