NPFL: Eguma Happy To Break Sunshine Stars’ Jinx (AUDIO)

Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma has expressed delight and relief after his side defeated Sunshine Stars in a Match Day 10 Nigeria professional Football League (NPFL) tie in Port Harcourt on Sunday, their first win against the Akure-based outfit since 2016.

Eguma’s men came from behind, after Omo Jesu Ogunniyi put the visitors in front, to secure the win, thanks to goals from Peter Ubakamma and Konan N’gouan.

Speaking after the match, the former Enyimba assistant coach informed journalists that his side planned for the victory which did not come as a surprise to him, adding that Sunshine Stars will henceforth ‘fall in Port Harcourt’.

“Let me tell you, it was a resolution of the entire team that we have to beat Sunshine Stars this time around,” Eguma disclosed.

“They’ve been very lucky anytime they come to Port Harcourt in the past few years. But this time around we resolved that we are going to beat them by working hard, and we did that.

“After we lost to Akwa United in Uyo, we came back, worked hard and resolved that we have to beat Sunshine Stars,

“Even when they scored [the] first goal, it didn’t deter us, it didn’t demoralize us, the players came back to the game equalized and went ahead to get the second goal.

“So, I think we have broken the jinx, and henceforth, Sunshine will always fall in Port Harcourt.”

With the 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars, Rivers United moved up to 7th place on the NPFL log with 15 points from 10 matches.

Up next for the Pride of Rivers is a trip to Gombe for a date with promoted-Adamawa United on 29 December in a Match Day 11 fixture.
