Nigeria’s Junior Handball Team on the Verge of Missing World Handball Championship in Barcelona Despite Qualifying

Nigeria’s junior male handball team is set on edge ahead of the World Junior Handball Championship holding in Barcelona due to paucity of funds, President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Ocheho says.

Nigeria qualified for the championship after coming behind Egypt and Tunisia at the Africa Junior Handball Nations Cup held in Morocco in 2018.

In a press release made by the Handball Federation of Nigeria(HFN), Ocheho made a plea to corporate bodies to aid the federation in funding the Junior male national handball team poised to attend the World Championship in Barcelona and revealed “funding may hinder us(the team) from attending the competition”.

A hopeful Ocheho said, “The federation is doing everything possible to make sure the boys participate in the Junior World Handball Championship. The boys are in high spirits and are looking forward to the competition.”

According to the HFN boss, Nigeria will be participating at the IHF Emerging Nations Tournament in Georgia which will also be used as a training tour for the World Championship as ten members of the Junior Handball team bound for Barcelona have been listed in the Georgia contingent.

Nigeria last appeared at the world championship thirty-four years ago and have been drawn alongside France, Egypt, Sweden, Korea, and Australia for the U21 World Handball Championship scheduled for 25th July.
