Nigerian-born Champion Helen Joseph Faces Mikaela Mayer In Super-feather Bout

Nigeria-born boxing champion Helen Joseph will face Mikaela Mayer in a Super Featherweight contest on Tuesday, 9 June 2020.

Helen popularly known as the Iron Lady with a 15-year career spanning 23 professional fights, has recorded 17 victories including 10 knockouts and has drawn 4. She has tasted defeat only twice.

The 30-year-old has clinched victory in three title bouts thereby enriching her resume with the International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Female Bantamweight and Global Boxing Union titles.

She will face the USA’s Mikaela who has a 100 per cent professional career record with 12 victories on her belt including 5 knockouts in ten rounds of action at the MGM, Grand, Las Vegas.

Mikaela currently holds the WBC-NABF female super featherweight title which she acquired by beating Vanessa Bradford at the CHI Health Center, Omaha, Nebraska in the United States in 2018.

The Nigerian has not found it easy finding opponents despite her rich resume.

According to the pugilist during an interview in 2019, opponents confessed to being scared of her boxing prowess.

“Whenever we get a fight, the girls end up finding out exactly who I am and call my manager to tell him that we are not ready for Helen Joseph. Most of the girls are avoiding me,” she was quoted to have said.

A paltry 23 fights in 15 years explains her plight.

She had to buy a Super Bantamweight fight against Hungary’s Martina Horgasx in August 2019 by raising 10,000 dollars – through the magnanimity of the Nigerian Consulate in the US – for the organizers to stage the bout considering she lacks popularity and sponsorship.

The Nigerian will hope to have a title break when she faces her American counterpart in her 24th career fight.

Helen Joseph who is also dubbed “Princess of Africa” hails from Rivers State but resides in the city of Connecticut, United States of America.
