Igali Laments Lack Of Cash Reward For National Wrestlers, As Dalung Promise Other Sports After D’Tigress Reception

The president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali has expressed his displeasure over the lack of cash reward for national wrestlers.

In a couple of posts on his twitter handle, the former world, and Olympic wrestling champion described how well the national wrestlers have done at continental and world championships.

The 43-year-old said: “NGR National Wrestlers: 8 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze 2017 African champs. Silver medal at Senior World Championships. Your reward is in heaven.”

On Wednesday, President Buhari received and declared cash rewards for the triumphant D’Tigress at the state house in Abuja following the team’s successful 2017 Afrobasket Women campaign, while nothing of such happened when Odunayo Adekuoroye claimed Nigeria’s first ever silver medal at world wrestling championships last week.

“NGR National Wrestling Team: You won 12 out of 36 medals won by team Nigeria (1/3 of all medals) in Glasgow. Your reward is in heaven,” Igali added.

However, The Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Solomon Dalung, has declared that the government will reward athletes of other sports who “had won laurels for the country” saying “we will still do it at the appropriate time”.

“Although we have athletes who had competed in other sports and had won laurels for the country, we felt it was economical to present the basketball team which was on ground in view of the fact that if you look at the components of players, they are mixed with national players and foreign based.”

“For those we have not been able to receive, we will still do it at the appropriate time knowing fully well that this government is always committed to receiving an honouring our athletes whenever they make the country proud.” the minister explained to State House correspondents.
