Nigeria Loses African Athletics Championships Hosting Rights – Reports

The African Athletics Championships will no longer hold in Nigeria after the country was stripped of hosting rights by the Confederation of African Athletics after local health authorities declined to approve the event according to reports.

Africa’s premier athletics meet had been scheduled for 23-27 June in Lagos.

Nigeria lifted restrictions on sporting events last year but tournaments involving a potentially large gathering and international athletes require pre-approval from the country’s Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.

That approval has failed to arrive for the African Athletics Championships despite the assurances from the Sports Ministry. Nigeria will no longer host the event as a result the CAA announced.

The country hosted the African African Championships most recently in Asaba in 2019.

The CAA have yet to announce a new host country.
