Nigeria Handed Tough Africa Women’s Handball Championship Group

Nigeria’s women’s national handball team has been paired in Group B of the 24th Africa Women’s Handball Championship alongside hosts, Cameroon.

Others in the group include DR Congo and Kenya.

The Africa Women Handball Championship will hold in Yaoundé, Cameroon from 10-20 June, 2021.

Reacting to the draw, president of the Handball Federation of Nigeria Mr. Sam Ocheho acknowledged the women have been dealt a tough group but assured preparations are already in place for the team to do well in the championship.

Ocheho added the HFN will do everything possible to ensure the team performs well in the championship in order to qualify for the World Championship.

Nigeria will be participating in their ninth Africa Women’s Handball Championship and first since the 1994 edition where they finished 5th in Tunisia.

They have won the competition once in 1991 in Egypt where they defeated Angola in the final. Their only other final appearance was in 1983 where they lost to Congo.

In Group A, Senegal, Tunisia, Guinea and Madagascar are drawn together.

Defending champions Angola were drawn in Group C alongside Congo, Algeria and Cape Verde.

Cameroon will play Kenya in the opening match of the championship.
