Nigeria To Face European Giants France In High Profile Friendly

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will face France in a Grade A international friendly ahead of next year’s African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).

The match, arranged by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), will take place in the French capital of Paris on a yet-to-be confirmed date.

The friendly will be the first meeting between the two teams in over six years.

The last time both sides met in 2011, Marie-Laure Delie struck in the second half to give the French women senior national team a 1-0 victory in what was a Group A match at the 2011 FIFA Women World Cup.

The match is expected to be Falcons’ first match for over a year since winning last year’s edition of AWCON in Cameroon in December 2016.

The friendly match will kickstart preparations for AWCON 2018 qualifiers under new coach Randy Waldrum.

Nigeria were given a first round bye and will now face the winner of the first round tie between Burkina Faso and Gambia in the second round scheduled to start in April 2018.

The 2018 AWCON will also serve as the CAF qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup in France with the top three sides expected to qualify for the global tournament.
