NFF Confirms Asaba For Egypt Friendly

The Nigeria Football Federation have confirmed the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State as the venue for the friendly match between the Super Eagles and the Pharaohs of Egypt in March

The Egypt FA had announced in December that both teams who have already secured qualification to the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will play a friendly on 26 March 2019 after their last AFCON qualifying games in March.

The decision to play the friendly at the ground named after one of Nigeria’s greatest sporting icons who both played for and coached the Super Eagles to AFCON triumphs was taken after the NFF reached an understanding with the Delta State government who promised to underwrite a substantial chunk of the match costs.

The friendly comes four days after the Eagles take on Seychelles in their final Group E AFCON Qualifiers at the same venue in Asaba where they were also held to a goalless draw by the Cranes of Uganda in November 2018.

The friendly between three time African Champions Nigeria and seven time champions Egypt will be the 18th meeting between both sides with Nigeria holding the upper hand having won seven times to Egypt’s five with another five matches drawn.

They last met in the 2017 Nations Cup qualifying with The Pharaohs earning a 1-1 draw away from home before winning 1-0 in Alexandria to qualify for the AFCON finals ahead of the Super Eagles.
