Nasarawa Amazons Continue Winning Ways, hand Rivers Angels second defeat

Nasarawa Amazons continued their impressive winning ways in the Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) Super4 as they defeated defending cup champions Rivers Angels 2-1 On Tuesday. The match which was a repeat of the Aiteo Cup semi-final between both teams saw Rivers Angels make one change from Matchday One, as captain of the side and first choice goalkeeper Charity John came into the team to replace goalkeeper Oluehi.

The Lafia ladies who defeated Baylesa Queens by a lone goal in their first game of the competition maintained the same starting eleven and showed a serious and more co-ordinated attacking composure to make sure the Jewels of River got nothing from the game.

The first goal of the game was scored in the opening five minutes of the game when Igboamalu Chinyere volleyed Mathias Josephine’s cross beyond the on-looking Charity John. As it was with their first game in the competition when they went a goal down, Rivers Angels continued to play their usual attacking football, piling the pressure. But they simply couldn’t find their scoring boots – just as in their first game.

Buoyed by their lead and unforgivable misses by the Jewels of River, the Lafia ladies took the opportunity and were rewarded with the second goal in the 26th minute of the game when Effiom Mabel diverted Anam Imo’s low cross into her net under pressure to make it two nil for the Amazons-a lead which they maintained into half time.

In the second half Coach Edwin Okon of Rivers Angels made series of attacking changes to give the defence of Nasarawa Amazons more to think about, and his team was rewarded with a deserving goal in the 72nd minute when substitute Mercy Amanze sent a curler into the back of the net after weaving her way through three players. It seemed like a fightback was on the cards for Rivers Angels but it wasn’t to be as the Lafia ladies dug deep to defend their slander lead.

This victory means Nasarawa Amazons have gotten to the final of the competition with a game to spare while Rivers Angels would only be playing for pride in their last game of the competition but would be looking to make amends as their attention shifts to the Aiteo Cup.

Final rounds of group games would be played on Thursday (12-10-2017) at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and it would see Nasarawa Amazons play against Delta Queens by 2:00pm while Rivers Angels would play against Baylesa Queens by 4:00pm.
