Real Madrid claimed bragging rights in the Madrid derby as they inflicted a first defeat of the season on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
The win took the defending champions to within three points of the summit.
Atletico remain one point above Real Sociedad.
Casemiro headed Real in front the 15th minute from Toni Kroos’ corner and Dani Carvajal’s second-half strike from outside the box which rebounded off the post and snuck in off the back of Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak sealed the win for the hosts at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.
Diego Simeone’s side had won seven consecutive league games going into the derby, conceding just twice in their first 10 La Liga fixtures.
But it was Real who dominated to hand their city rivals a first league defeat since a 1-0 loss in this fixture on 1 February.
