Ligue 1 Review: Marseille Leapfrog Olympique Rivals Lyon Into Second Spot With Metz Thrashing

Olympique Marseille have leapfrogged Olympique Lyon into second place on the French Ligue 1 table after they handed out a 6-3 thrashing to bottom club Metz at home.

The hosts race into a three-goal lead in the first half courtesy strikes from Morgan Sanson and Florian Thauvin (2).

Former Monaco striker Valerie Germain added a fourth after the interval before the aforementioned Thauvin completed his hattrick to put Marseille 5-0 up with eleven second half minutes gone.

Florent Mollet pulled one back for the basement side in the 73rd minute and within two minutes Marseille restored their five-goal advantage through substitute Kostas Mitroglou.

Metz thereafter scored two late goals courtesy Mollet and Idrissa Niane to make the scoreline a bit respectable.

The win takes Marseille above Lyon (48 points) to 51 points in second place while Metz (18 points) stay rooted to the bottom of the table and are seven points away from safety.
