Ligue 1: Injury Robs Osimhen Of Lille Goalscoring Record

Death, taxes and Victor Osimhen scoring at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Ligue 1 used to be life’s certainties, but no more after a suspected groin injury robbed the Super Eagles marksman of the chance to continue his incredible run for Lille in the 3-0 home win against Samuel Kalu’s Bordeaux on Saturday.

Osimhen saw his run of scoring in every league game at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy come to an end after a suspected adductor injury forced him off in the 58th minute with Lille 1-0 up.

His replacement Loic Remy got on the scoresheet with Lille’s third goal after Benjamin Andre and Yusuf Yazici had earlier scored.

Saturday’s game marked the second straight game Osimhen has failed to score at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy after drawing a blank against Valencia in the Champions League.

Prior to that, he’d scored seven goals in five straight league games and six in total including the champions league with his lethal finishing earning him Ligue 1’s player of the month award for September.

It is not clear how long Osimhen would be out for but manager Christophe Galtier speaking after the match said the injury could be a “problem” for the 20-year-old who’s scored 8 times in 14 matches the Great Danes.

With injuries of this nature taking an average of six weeks to heal, Osimhen could miss Nigeria’s 2021 AFCON qualifier on 13 November handing Gernot Rohr another headache following the recent injury to first-choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
