Leon Balogun Joins Wigan Athletic

Leon Balogun has joined Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic on loan till the end of the season parent club Brighton and Hove Albion confirmed on transfer deadline day.

Balogun will be a free agent when the loan comes to an end as his contract with the Seagulls runs out at the end of the season.

The move very nearly fell through with The Athletic reporting that Wigan inadvertently sent the wrong documents to Brighton but managed to correct their error minutes before the 11 pm transfer deadline.

The 31-year-old joined Brighton on a free transfer from German side FSV Mainz in the summer of 2018 but has had a torrid time at the Amex Stadium playing just 12 times in one-and-a-half seasons.

He played just 8 times in the league and twice in the FA Cup last season and has fallen even further out of favour this season failing to make a single appearance in the league with his two appearances coming in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.

With the move to Wigan who are 22nd in the Championship, Balogun who featured 31 times for the Super Eagles before losing his place, has opted to swap inactivity in the Premier League for regular football albeit in a relegation-threatened side.
