Lagos Picked As Host For FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

Lagos has been selected as host for the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup African qualifiers according to the international basketball body.

The 4th window of the African qualifiers in Group F will now take place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos from September 14 to 16, 2018.

Nigeria will battle for a World Cup ticket alongside Senegal, Cote D I’voire, Central Africa Republic, Rwanda and Mali in Group F.

Five African teams will qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China from the two groups (E and F) of the final round (window) of the qualifiers.

The choice of Lagos by FIBA was confirmed by the media officer of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Afolabi Oni.

In a statement issued by Mr. Oni, the decision was communicated to the NBBF by FIBA Secretary General, Alphonse Bile.

The statement read: “The decision to award the hosting the rights of the 4th window of the qualifiers was contained in a letter sent to NBBF secretariat by FIBA Africa Secretary General, Alphonse Bile on Friday.

“The latest announcement has been described by many as an evidence of the growing confidence in Nigeria by FIBA Africa to be a major player on the African continent.” It further read.

Lagos would be hosting the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers for the second time.
