Champions Real Madrid have closed the gap on the top two after they saw off city rivals Getafe 3-1 at the Estadio Santiago Bernebeu on Saturday night.
Gareth Bale and a Cristiano Ronaldo strike on the stroke of halftime gave Madrid a 2-0 lead before the visitors were reduced to 10 men after former Chelsea and Newcastle United forward Loic Remy was given his marching orders for two yellow cards.
Francisco Portillo pulled one back from the spot to give the Los Merengues a scare before Ronaldo wrapped up the points with his brace.
The win takes Real Madrid (54 points) to within seven points of Atletico Madrid (61 points) in second place and 12 points of leaders Barcelona (66 points).
