Kiki Bertens Stuns Top Seed Halep To Win Cincinnati Masters Title

Kiki Bertens claimed the biggest scalp of her career after she stunned top seed and world number one Simona Halep to become the first Dutch player to win the Cincinnati Masters.

The world number 17 defeated the Romanian tennis star 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 in two hours and five minutes to win the biggest title of her career.

Kiki Bertens, 26, also becomes the first Dutch player to win a singles WTA/ATP hard court tournament since 2006.

Speaking afterwards, she said: “I cannot find the words for this moment.”

On her own part, Halep, who has now lost three finals (2015, 2017 and 2018) said: “I was a little bit tired, but it was an amazing week.”

“Kiki really deserved this title. I have lost three finals here but maybe I’ll be able to win one in the future.” She concluded.
