Kada, Delta Queens share the spoils in local derby as Niger Flickers & Kada Stars continue to struggle

There was no winner as Kada Queens and Delta Queens faced off in one of the local derbies played at the ongoing Africa Cup for Club Champions in Abuja on Sunday.

While the Nigerian women teams got a point each the men were beaten by their continental opponents. The game between Kada Queens and Delta Queens like the tie between GRA Ladies and Ghana Police ended in a goalless draw.

Delta Queens, who had lost three consecutive games to Kada Queens this year, gave a good fight against their arch-rivals. They were very close to getting the winning goal but Adeyemi Morufat saved a goal-bound strike after the goalie had been beaten.

In the end, Delta Queens didn’t allow Kada Queens add to their victories from the Super League and the National Sports Festival.

In the men’s category, both Kada Stars and Niger Flickers lost their games to teams who were more clinical in front of goal.

In the early minutes of the game between Kada Stars and El-Sharkia of Egypt, the Nigerians gave a very good fight. The boys were not fazed by the size and the fact that they were up against the defending champions.

They played a good game and were close to scoring but it was the champions who took the lead in the 9th minute through Hussain Ahmed. He completed his brace in the 27th minute. Before the Egyptians got their second goal, Kada Stars’ Kelvin Linus missed glaring goalscoring chances.

Ibrahim Samir scored two goals in the 36th and 39th minutes to increase Sharkia’s tally to four. Edres Mohamed, Ahmed Gamal and Gobran Hosam scored in the 40th, 41st and54th minutes to increase the Egyptians tally to 7.

James Samaila got a consolation goal for Kada Stars from a penalty corner in the 59th minute.

For Niger Flickers, they will rue their poor finishing and 15 minutes los of concentration in their loss against GRA of Ghana.

The former Nigerian champions were the better team for the first 30 minutes of the game and could have scored three goals but Michael Agbaegbu and co fluffed their lines.

From a penalty stroke converted by Adamu Kolo, Niger Flickers took the lead in the 18th minute and could have scored more but didn’t.

GRA started the third quarter like a house on fire and were immediately rewarded when a lack of communication and concentration at the back allowed Anim-Assah Kwasi to equalize for GRA.

Three minutes later it became two after Obeng Opoku converted a well worked out penalty corner. Anim-Assah Kwasi increased GRA’s tally to three with his second of the day.

Obeng Opoku also completed his brace in the 48th minute from a penalty stroke before Aliyu Idris scored in the 53rd minutes to reduce the deficit to two.

It wasn’t the best of days for the men’s team but the women’s teams remain undefeated after two games.
